If the idea of being in front of the camera on your wedding day makes you feel a little nervous, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, most of the couples I work with say the same thing, they’re not used to being photographed and don’t want to spend their day posing or feeling awkward. The good news is, you don’t need to be “good in front of the camera” to look natural in your wedding photos. When your day is planned in a way that feels relaxed, and you’re gently guided rather than posed, something shifts, you stop thinking about the camera altogether and simply enjoy what’s happening. And that’s when the most meaningful, genuine moments are captured.

Let’s be honest, not everyone loves having their photo taken. On your wedding day, when all eyes and lenses are on you for hours, this feeling can get much stronger.
Many brides worry about:
These concerns are totally normal! Some brides have spent years avoiding cameras, and suddenly they’re the star of a full-day photo session.
Quick Tip: Remember that your photographer takes thousands of photos, but you’ll only see the best ones.
The good news? Even the most camera-shy people can look natural in wedding photos. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times, brides who start the day nervous end up with gorgeous, natural-looking photos they love.
You don’t need to be a model or have perfect poses. The right techniques, a bit of practice, and working with a photographer who makes you feel at ease will make all the difference.

Getting ready for your wedding day photos starts long before you say “I do.” The right prep can make a huge difference in how natural you look.
My role as your photographer isn’t to turn your wedding into a photo shoot. It’s to create a space where you feel calm, comfortable, and completely yourselves. I guide you gently, but never force anything. No stiff poses. No pressure to “perform.”
Finding a photographer who gets you is key to feeling at ease. When you meet with potential photographers:
The connection between you and your photographer matters more than fancy equipment. When you feel comfortable, it shows in your photos. Look natural in your wedding photos by picking someone who makes you laugh and feel relaxed.
Pro Tip: Schedule a video call with your top choices. You’ll get a better sense of their personality than from emails alone.
Remember, the best photographer for you isn’t always the most expensive or famous. It’s the one who makes you forget about the camera and just be yourself.
Don’t rush this decision. Your photographer will be with you all day, so you should enjoy their company. When you find someone who gets your vision and makes you feel good, your photos will capture the real you, even if you normally hide from cameras!

A pre-wedding photography session is the perfect way to get to know your photographer and to practice feeling relaxed in front of the camera. You can also use these photos for your invitation cards. Check out my blog on “The importance of a pre-wedding photography session”
The morning of your wedding sets the tone for your entire day and your photos! Here’s how to create a calm environment that leads to natural-looking images.
Having too many people in your getting-ready space can amp up stress. Stick with 3-5 people who truly calm you down.
Quick Tip: Choose a room with good natural light and minimal clutter for better photos.
Add an extra 30 minutes to whatever timeline you think you need. Running late equals stress, and stress shows up in photos. When you’re relaxed, your photos look more natural. This is why I always suggest that the bride’s hair and make needs to be finished at least one hour before the ceremony.

Standing straight toward the camera can feel awkward. Turn your body about 45 degrees away from the camera, then turn your face back toward it. This creates a slimming effect and looks more natural.
Hands can feel awkward in photos! Try these natural positions:
I will always gently guide you into the movements that will make you look relaxed and present. I won’t just point the camera and expect you to know what to do with your hands.
Before the photographer clicks, take a deep breath in and slowly exhale. This relaxes your face and shoulders, creating a more natural look in photos.
Remember your photographer wants you to look amazing. Trust their guidance, and don’t be afraid to tell them if you feel uncomfortable in any pose.
This is your big day and I want you to enjoy every moment. I always tell my couples that this is their wedding day not my photo shoot. If you are feeling too nervous or anxious before the ceremony and don’t want to carry on with your getting ready portraits, we can always try them again later. This day is about you and not about the photographer’s portfolio.

Just be in the moment! This isn’t a magazine photo shoot, it’s your wedding day and needs to be treated as such. During your ceremony your photographer should not be a distraction. They need to photograph all of the important parts but they should not distract you from what really matters… you are marrying the love of your life.
The secret to looking natural in your wedding photos is simple: forget the camera exists. When you’re saying your vows, look at your partner – not the photographer. Feel those butterflies and happy tears. Those raw emotions make the best photos.
I know, It’s not that easy so try these easy tricks to stay present:
I tell my couples to focus on each other and not look at me. “pretend I’m not even there,” as most photographers say doesn’t always work. When you focus on each other its easier to be caught up in the moment, your face then relaxes and your smile becomes real. This will help you to look natural in your wedding photos.

Group photos don’t need to be stiff or boring. Here’s how to make them quick and still look great:
For body confidence, remember that good posture changes everything. Stand tall but relaxed, with shoulders back and down.
The best wedding venues in Malaga offer stunning backgrounds that take pressure off you. With gorgeous scenery behind you, you’ll feel less like the center of attention.
Don’t stress about getting every pose perfect. The photos that show your personality and joy will be the ones you treasure most.
Tip: Timing is also important. When it comes to your group photos you don’t want to be standing in one place as each group comes in for a photo and miss out on your cocktails. I always recommend my couples have 10-12 groups only. To ensure you enjoy your cocktails too. Having a detailed list that can be given to a bridesmaid or groomsmen to bring those in the groups to the photo area will make the whole process run quickly and smoothly.

This is where your photographer should shine! Do they help you feel comfortable? Can they help you feel connected with your partner?
Make sure you have spoken to them about the best time of day for your couple photos. This tends to be about one hour before sunset. Local knowledge here is very important.
Let’s be honest, the reception is when most people finally loosen up. After the ceremony, there’s a big sigh of relief, and that’s when natural photos happen. This is the perfect time for candid photos of you and your guests enjoying the day.
The dance floor is where some of the best wedding photos come to life. Here’s how to let loose even if you feel awkward:
Remember, some of the best photos happen when you’re laughing at your uncle’s crazy dance moves or when your college friends form a circle around you. Natural joy beats perfect posing every time.

Many people don’t like how they look in photos. Try practicing in a mirror to find your best angles. Ask your photographer for guidance on flattering poses that work for you. Remember, your wedding day happiness will shine through!
Stand at a slight angle to the camera, not straight-on. Keep your chin slightly forward and down. Create space between your arms and body. Good posture works wonders, stand tall with shoulders back. Your photographer can also use lighting and angles to help.
Practice your natural smile in a mirror. Try thinking of something funny rather than saying “cheese.” Take a deep breath before photos to relax your face. Ask your photographer to count down so you’re not holding a smile too long. Sometimes looking away then back at the camera creates a fresh expression.
Pro tip: The best photos often happen when you’re focused on enjoying your day rather than worrying about being photographed.
I get it, camera shyness is real! As someone who’s worked with hundreds of nervous brides, I’ve developed a sixth sense for when you need space and when you need guidance.
My approach is simple:
Most clients tell me, “I didn’t even notice you taking photos!” That’s because I work quietly and quickly. No long, awkward posing sessions that feel like a photoshoot.
Instead of barking orders, I create a calm bubble around you. My past brides often say:
“Issy made me forget I was being photographed. The photos look like us, not some stiff, posed version of us.”
We’ll chat about your specific concerns before the big day to help you both feel at ease and look natural in your wedding photos.
I won’t rush through shots, I take time to build trust. We’ll have a casual meet-up before your wedding where we can talk through what makes you nervous and help you build a timeline that will result in a relaxed and perfect wedding day!
