For a relaxed, sun-soaked wedding experience in southern Spain
If you’re travelling to southern Spain for a wedding, you’re in for something really special.
The Costa del Sol isn’t just about beach resorts, it’s slow mornings, long lunches, hidden beaches, and golden evenings that seem to last forever. For many of my couples coming from the UK, one of the things they care about most is making sure their guests have an amazing experience too.
So I’ve put together this Malaga Wedding Travel Guide with my personal recommendations, the places I’d suggest to friends visiting for a wedding here. Think relaxed, beautiful, and a little bit off the beaten path.
📍 Marbella
For relaxed beach days, beautiful old streets, and a mix of everything
Things to do
Start your morning wandering through Casco Antiguo (Old Town). If you go early, you’ll find quiet streets, little cafés opening up, and that soft morning light that makes everything feel calm.
For something more natural, head to Dunas de Artola, one of the few untouched beaches in the area, with wooden walkways and a much quieter feel than the centre.
Where to eat & drink
- El Patio de Mariscal – a romantic courtyard setting, perfect for a slow dinner
- Cascada Cocina & Bar – relaxed and lively, French cuisine with a Spanish twist
- Chiringuito Triana – simple beachfront lunches done really well
A little hidden gem
Slip into a small wine bar like La Taberna del Pintxo Marbella, easy to miss, but always full of atmosphere.
📍 Estepona
Quieter, more local, and full of charm
Things to do
The heart of Estepona is its flower-filled old town, Estepona Old Town and it’s one of the loveliest places to simply wander without a plan.
The seafront promenade is perfect in the evening, especially as the light softens and everything slows down.
Where to eat & drink
- La Casa del Rey – incredible tapas and a great wine selection
- El Pescador – classic seafood right by the sea
- Chiringuito Lolailo – relaxed beach vibes
A little hidden gem
Grab a coffee early in the morning before the streets fill up, Estepona feels completely different (and even more special) when it’s quiet.
📍 Málaga
Culture, food, and a vibrant city atmosphere
Things to do
Explore the historic centre around Calle Larios, then make your way up to the Alcazaba of Málaga for beautiful views across the city.
If you have the energy, continue up to Gibralfaro Castle, especially at sunset.
Where to eat & drink
- El Pimpi – iconic and lively
- La Recova – perfect for a relaxed breakfast
- Casa Lola – fun, casual tapas
A little hidden gem
Head slightly out of the centre to Pedregalejo, a much more local seaside area with amazing seafood and a slower pace.
📍 Mijas Pueblo
Whitewashed streets, mountain views, and a slower pace
Things to do
Wander through Mijas Pueblo, stopping at viewpoints along the way. It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the light starts to soften.
Where to eat & drink
- Alboka Gastro Bar – modern cuisine
- Restaurante Aroma – relaxed and elegant
- La Boveda del Flamenco – full of atmosphere
- Mayan Monkey Chocolate Factory – Perfect for those with a sweet tooth and they do chocolate making workshops too. Kids will love it!
A little hidden gem
Step away from the main streets and you’ll quickly find quiet corners and viewpoints with hardly anyone around.
📍 Nerja
Dramatic coastline, clear water, and a more untouched feel
Things to do
Visit the famous Balcón de Europa, but go early or later in the day to avoid the crowds.
For a truly beautiful beach, head to Playa de Maro, clear water, natural surroundings, and one of the best in the area.
Where to eat & drink
- El Pulguilla – casual, local seafood
- La Puntilla – simple and traditional
- Ayo – famous beachfront paella
A little hidden gem
Walk just a little further along the coastline and you’ll find small, quiet coves that feel completely untouched.
🚗 Getting Around the Costa del Sol
One of the most common questions I get from couples and their guests is how easy it is to get around and the answer is: it depends how much exploring you want to do.
- Car hire: The best option if you want full flexibility, especially for villa weddings or exploring multiple areas
- Taxis & Uber: Easy in Marbella and Málaga, slightly less reliable in smaller towns
- Public transport: Buses connect most places, but they can be slow
✨ My honest recommendation:
If you’re here to relax around the wedding, taxis and staying local work perfectly. If you want to explore properly, hiring a car makes everything much easier.
🌿 Final Thoughts
The best thing you can do here is slow down.
Long lunches, late dinners, time by the pool, and wandering without a plan—that’s when this part of Spain really comes to life.
And if you’re here for a wedding, even better… because it’s exactly the kind of place where those moments feel a little more meaningful.
